Reflection: Weeks 13-14 & Overall Course

Well folks this is my last blog post....at least for Environmental :( It has been a blast getting to know everyone in class, at least those I did not already know. I have to admit I was not sure about blogging but after doing it I realized it was a lot of fun.

These past 2 weeks have flown by! Here is a recap of what we did:
  • Toured Goodwill
  • Did our Advocacy letter/fact sheet and online learning activities
  • Wrapped up our SMART goals
  • Show and Tell of our junking projects
Touring Goodwill was a lot of fun and interesting. I had never been there before this class so I was able to learn a lot. I could not believe how many things they had in the back of the store. It is great so many people donate things. While there I was even able to pick up a cute leopard cardigan!

Our advocacy projects opened up a lot of our eyes to new issues and bills. As I have stated in previous blogs, I had never really participated in government issues but se
eing which bills are trying to be passed was really cool. The bill I focused on was an education act for Emergency Contraception. Not only did I learn a lot of this topic but I hope my blog groups did as well.

After wrapping up our SMART goals I felt such a sense of accomplishment. Being able to succeed at this goal made me feel very good. Along the way I was also able to influence others which was just as important to me. Thanks for all the support from my fellow bloggers! :)

Last, but definitely not least, we did our junking projects. I had the most
fun with this project. It was cool being able to create something from junk and sharing it with the class. My junking project was a wine cork board. It was very easy to make. All I needed was a frame, black paint, hot glue gun, and wine corks. The pictures below are my junking project. Enjoy!

Overall, I learned a lot about myself and the environment. I admit I was a little selfish when it came to the use of the environment. I wouldn't recycle sometimes, never really cared about governmental issues, and used as many resources as I wanted without thinking anything of it. Well now I rethink everything I do. For example, do I really need that bottle of Gatorade or hormone-injected meat....do not think so!! Environmental health opened my eyes to many issues that get swept under the rug....well that rug is rising. It is time to talk and fix these problems before we run out of resources and ruin it for future generations.

Hope everyone has a safe, relaxing break!!!

Eye Opener: Online Learning Activities

These Online Learning Activities were made by members of my group. Below I will post my answers to their activities!

Kristen's Air Quality Crossword Puzzle
Instructions: Read the 4 posted articles. After reading, use the articles to complete the crossword puzzle.

Answers:
Down:
1. Air Quality Index
2. Air Toxics
3. Mobile

Across:
4. Asthma
5. Carbon Monoxide
6. EPA

Heidi's Childhood Obesity Quiz
Instructions: Click on the Childhood Obesity Quiz link to take the quiz. Record your results and report back what you learned.

There were 10 true and false questions pertaining to childhood obesity. I received a score of 10/10 = 100%. I knew many of these questions because I have done numerous papers on childhood obesity. This topic interests me because it is such a big issue that needs to be addressed and fixed. One of the questions that could trick people are; a child should have 3 glasses of fruit juice a day. Even though I did get this question right, they should have been more specific because 100% fruit juice is different than juice concentrate.

Brier's Smoking Fact Find
Instructions: Review the posted links. Find 5 things that you did not know before watching the videos or things that really effected you. Post the 5 things learned you learned. Also, provide 1 reason why you remain smoke-free or chose to become smoke-free.

5 Things I did not know or things that effected me:

1. The video, MDCH-It's Like They are Smoking, was very sad. When people smoke around others or their kids it drives me crazy. It is not fair to those who do not smoke to have to be exposed to these chemicals. Why should we have to get sick because of someone else's actions? Smoking around people, especially kids, is one of the worst things you can do to their health.

2. According to the American Heart Association, there has been a 15 percent drop in heart attacks since the Smoking Ban took place. (In 2007, 91,000 Minnesotans got treatment for heart attack. In 2009, 78,00 were treated.)

3. There are new cigarettes called E-Cigarettes that people are starting to smoke. These are cigarettes that contain nicotine but produce no smoke. These are absolutely ridiculous. Things like this make me wonder what they will come up with next.

4. According to the American Nonsmokers' Rights Foundation, 446 U.S. campuses are either tobacco-free or are in the works of implementing such a policy. This is amazing that so many schools have taken the initiative to become smoke-free. If campuses can have a policy on alcohol use on campus, why not have a tobacco policy. Many people can be exposed to secondhand smoke on campus so implementing policies should decrease the intake of these chemicals. Hopefully these policies will give smokers the willpower to consider quitting.

5. Smoking costs Minnesota nearly 3 billion dollars in health care costs. Smoking kills. When health care costs rise to 3 billion dollars you know there is a problem. Hopefully with all the work the U.S. is doing with implementing smoking bans and policies we can start to see an even bigger decrease in tobacco use.

I choose not to smoke because I know how detrimental it is for your health and people around you. I grew up with parents who smoked and it drove me crazy. I will never put myself or my family in jeopardy.

Mary's Health Insurance For All
Instructions: Watch the posted video. Visit the two posted websites. Play the game, You Bet Your Health. After completing all of this, share one or two things you learned from this activity.

What I learned:
1. The game, You Bet Your Health, put a lot of things into perspective. If you do not have health insurance you get stuck paying for everything. Doctor visits, medication, and annual check-ups cost a lot of money. It was aggravating seeing the insurer win all of this money because your bills were not covered.

2. I think the new Health Reform has some great points. I like how kids are allowed to stay on their parent's plan until age 26 and that insurance companies are not able to drop you because of a submitted claim.

Emily's Uncovering the Facts About Cancer
Instructions:
First, visit the WebMD site and find 3 facts about cancer that interest you or that you never knew. Second, visit the American Cancer Society site and read about the different causes of cancer. Be able to list 3. Third, go to the webpage Preventcancer.org and read about things you can do to reduce your risk for cancer. Fourth, report 3 common causes of cancer and describe 3 of the ways you think you could best protect yourself against cancer.

3 facts about Cancer:
1. Observation studies have shown that cancer is more common in some people with certain dietary habits--such as colorectal cancer in people who have diets rich in meat products.

2. In the Gerson Therapy, cancer patients are treated with caffeinated coffee in the form of enemas every four hours on a daily basis.

3. An estimated 40% to 50% of fair-skinned people who live to be 65 will develop at least one skin cancer.

3 Different causes of cancer and ways to protect myself:
1. Genetics-Ways to protect myself would be to get screened
2. Tobacco- Do not ever take up smoking and avoid second-hand smoke as much as I can
3. Diet and Physical Activity-Remain Active and Eat more green--add color to my diet

Molly's No Way BPA in Baby Formula
Instructions: After looking over the websites listed, decide if you think the chemicals should be more or less regulated specifically relating to baby formula. Post a short reflection on it.

Yes, I 100 percent agree that chemicals should be more regulated when it comes to baby formula. Our kids are our future generations. Do we really want to put them in harms way? I was surprised by this next piece of information I found. The Toxic Substances Control Act fails to require that chemical companies prove their products are safe before they are sold. How are you able to sell a product without knowing if it is safe or not?

Everyone had great activities. I learned so much about all these topics. They are all important in their own ways. Keep up the great work!

Advocacy Project: Emergency Contraception 101

Emergency Contraception 101

Purpose:
To provide education for people who are interested in knowing more about emergency contraception. Educating others' on this would help lower pregnancy rates, abortion, and adoption processes. It is also very important for both men and women to know where emergency contraception is readily available just in case of an accident.

-Read 10 Common Myths, Misunderstandings, and big Ol' Lies About Emergency Contraception to learn about common myths associated with emergency contraception (EC)

-Learn more about Emergency Contraception from Planned Parenthood. They are a great agency that offer many resources for people of all ages. (Hint Hint)

-Go to the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals and play the Method Match activity. You choose 4 different methods of birth control and it compares the cost, effectiveness, side effects, prevention of STI's, and etc. It is very informative!

Instructions:

  • Next, do some research and find & list 3 places you could go to obtain emergency contraception in Duluth, MN.

Emergency contraception is a safe, effective way to prevent a pregnancy from occurring in the event of an accident. Hopefully after doing some research you can decide for yourself if this is something you would ever choose to use.

Eco-Chic Lifestyle Change Week 5: Final Weekly Review & Overall Project Reflection

My SMART goal is I will eat 4 servings (serving= 3 oz.) of hormone-free, grass-fed meat, per week. The new goal of 4 servings worked out great. I say this because this past weekend I had a second Thanksgiving so I ended up eating more meat than I usually do but I did not go over my SMART goal!

The strategies that helped me be most effective was letting my friends and family know what I was doing. Many of my friends and family did not understand that their are differences in meat so they had never really looked until I said something. Also, since I have told my family about this they either buy hormone-free deli meat or soy burgers if I am going to be home. The challenge I faced the entire time was when I went out to eat. I did cut out going out to eat a lot but of course there were times when I either did not have food or did not have time to make something.

I was very happy with myself this past week. I stuck to my new goal and let others know this option is out there. I felt most happy when I could explain to others what we have learned and why I chose this as my SMART goal. Many people have no idea what I am talking about which does not surprise me because I just learned a lot of it this semester! I learned I can easily do things I put my mind to and if you feel passionately about something try to influence or educate others to do the same.

Original SMART goal: I will eat 3 servings (serving= 3 oz.) of hormone-free, grass-fed meat, per week.
Updated SMART goal: I will eat 4 servings (serving= 3 oz.) of hormone-free, grass-fed meat, per week.
My goal changed because I felt I accomplished what I wanted to. I found hormone-free meat at a reasonable price so I felt I could increase my intake a little. It was nice having a variety in my meals. It also worked out perfect with the holidays approaching.

As I stated above what helped me most successful was letting others know what I was doing. Because they knew, they understood when I would search for the hormone-free option or wanted to stay in and make dinner. The one thing that complicated my goal was restaurants. It would be nice if they could state where they get their meat from. Not only would this make people feel comfortable knowing their meat was not injected with antibiotics or hormones, but it could increase their sales.

My SMART goal led me to new things. Never before did I think to look over my meat packages to see if they were hormone-free. I never thought about this before because I really did not know much about it. Accomplishing my goal made me realize I can do anything I set my mind to. I also learned I am able to influence others by my decisions. Many people do not know what really goes into their meat because they do not question it. I hope I can keep spreading the information I have learned to others. Behavior change is not hard when you really want to change. It takes time, will power, and confidence to really see a behavior change.

Making this change benefited the companies that sold this product and farms that chose to raise their animals the natural way. Hopefully by educating friends and family what I am doing they will do the same. Farms that choose to raise their animals the natural way should be rewarded and receive the most business.

I will continue this behavior because it is easy and rewarding. Taking the extra couple of minutes to look over the package is worth it. If I can somehow help farms who raise their animals without hormones I will do it.

Recommendations for others: Stick to your goal, modify if you want/have to, if you have questions....ask, and know you can do whatever you set your mind to!

Advocacy Project: Letter and Fact Sheet

December 5, 2010

Amy Klobuchar
U.S. Senate
302 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20510

VOTE YES ON H.R. 5561: EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION EDUCATION ACT OF 2010

The proposed bill on educating others' about emergency contraception use is very important. Emergency contraception would significantly lower the rates of teen or unwanted pregnancies. Instead of aborting the baby or having to go through the adoption process, ovulation would never occur. As a soon to be health educator I feel every person should know there are options out there if an accident were to ever happen. The use of this pill would help lower the cost of unwanted and unplanned pregnancies.

This act would provide education to people who are interested in knowing more about emergency contraception. Educating others' on this would help lower pregnancy rates, abortion, and adoption processes. According to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), "Nealy half (49%) of the more than 6 million pregnancies that occur each year are unplanned". Also, the effectiveness for emergency contraception can be as high as to 89 percent (ACOG 2010). Mistakes and accidents happen so lets inform people there are options out there to help.

Opponents of this bill may say emergency contraception is abortion or parents/guardians may feel it will be an incentive for kids to be sexually active. Kids will do whatever they want to do. Parents and guardians need to face the reality that they cannot be there for every part of their children's lives so we need to have another plan, like education. If we are able to educate kids or people in general, they will know they have this option and can choose for themselves whether to use it or not. Also, emergency contraception is not abortion. It stops ovulation so the sperm and egg do not meet. With the use of education, we can reach out to many people and provide them with resources to meet their needs.

I appreciate your support on health care, education, and family and children. Family planning is very important in all three of these groups. I hope you realize how important this is for people out there and vote "yes" to H.R. 5561. If I could provide you with any other information, please contact me.

Emergency Contraception Use
Fact Sheet

What is Emergency Contraception?

Emergency contraception, also called the morning-after pill, is a pill that prevents pregnancy after unprotected sex. It can be started up to five days after intercourse.

When should you use emergency contraception?
  • condom broke or slipped off, and he ejaculated in you
  • you forgot to take your birth control, you are not on birth control, or birth control was ineffective (e.g. ring fell out, diaphragm slipped out of place)
  • miscalculated your "safe" days"
  • you were forced to have unprotected sex or were raped
How does emergency contraception work?

Emergency contraception is made of progestin, one of the hormones found in birth control pills. The hormone in the morning-after pill keeps the ovaries from releasing an egg so sperm and the egg never meet. This pill also thickens the cervical mucus, which blocks the sperm and egg from joining.

How effective is emergency contraception?

There are many different brands of emergency contraception. Some of the more popular brands are Plan B One-Step, Ella, and Next Choice. These brands reduce the risk of pregnancy by 89 percent when started within three days of unprotected intercourse. This is effective up until five days after intercourse but gets less effective as time goes on.

How safe is emergency contraception?

The morning-after pill is safe. It does not have the same risks as taking ongoing birth control because this is made for a one-time use.

What are the disadvantages of emergency contraception?

There can be side effects while using the morning-after pill. Nausea and throwing up are the most common side effects. However, many women feel fine after taking it. Other side effects of the morning-after pill may include:
  • breast tenderness
  • irregular bleeding
  • dizziness
  • period may become irregular (come earlier or later, last longer or shorter)
Where can you get emergency contraception?

Emergency contraception is available from drugstores, clinics, or outlook clinics. Women and men older than 17 do not need a prescription. If you are younger than 17 you will need to go to a health center like a clinic to get a prescription. Places like Planned Parenthood or outlook clinics are a convenient and fast way to receive the morning-after pill. They are also able to bill most insurance companies if you do not have sufficient funds to pay for it.

Reflection: Weeks 9-12

I know everyone, including me, has said this over and over again but where has this semester gone?! I feel like three weeks ago we were just learning how to blog now we all have our blogs decorated fancy with cool backgrounds and tools and are making our posting so interesting and fun. Lets see, in the past four weeks we have learned a lot about:
I think two of the most important things we have done in the past four weeks are our advocacy and eco-chic projects. Because of this class I was obligated to find out about our political representatives. This actually made me happy because everyone should at least know who their representatives are. I am usually up-to-date with politics but this year I just had too many things going on. I also enjoyed being able to look on the Healthy People and THOMAS sites for current bills or proposals that are trying to be passed. Since our blogging groups are larger I was able to read about many different bills and why others' felt they should be passed.

Our SMART goals were another fun project. It was cool seeing how and why everyone picked their goals the way they did. Being able to receive positive feedback and constructive criticism from my groups members really helped me stay on track and become more eco-friendly.

Personally, I had a lot of fun with the photo essay. I was able to go to my friend Emily's farm, which I had wanted to do for a while. It was very exciting to be able to see things like this first hand because it puts things into perspective. It was also fun being able to see what others photo essays were about. I think our junking projects are going to be a lot like the photo essay. We are able to pick or make whatever we want to do and then show the class. I am excited to see what people make with their "junk".

Overall, besides learning a lot of from our eco-chic and advocacy projects, I have learned a lot from my group members. By switching groups and having to post individual messages on each blog I have got to know a lot of people in the class. I have read what others are doing, what interests them, and what they think of what I do. I love posting and reading the comments because then I get others' opinions and suggestions. Blogging is a good way to network, get others' opinions and ideas, and post what is on your mind.

Share & Voice: Wrap Recipe

Pepper Roll-Ups

Well since I have had a lot of requests for the wrap recipe I made for class, I decided to post it to my blog for anyone to have! They are very easy and usually a crowd pleaser!

Ingredients:
  • 1 package of Whole-Wheat Tortillas (Any type of tortilla would work)
  • 1 package of Neufchatel Cheese (Any type of cream cheese works)
  • 1 jar of Jalapeno Pepper slices
  • 1 jar of Roasted Red peppers
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin (Can alter to your taste)
  • 1 bag of Shredded Cheese
  • 1 package of turkey (optional)
Directions:
Mix cream cheese and cumin. Spread across wraps. Finely chop jalapenos and red peppers. Sprinkle shredded cheese and peppers over wraps. Roll up and cut into thicker slices so ingredients do not fall out. If using turkey or other meats put on meat after sprinkling shredded cheese then put on peppers.

The great thing about this recipe is you can really make it however you want. You can alter or change the ingredients to your liking. Other ingredients you could use are ham, roast beef, olives, other types of peppers, other spices, and etc. Hope you all enjoy! Also, if there are any questions just ask!

Eco-Chic Lifestyle Change Week 4: Weekly Update

My SMART goal is I will only eat 3 servings (serving= 3 oz) of hormone-free, grass-fed meat, per week. I did a good job at achieving my SMART goal.

My successes were once again being able to find hormone-free meat, eating out less, having more of a variety of foods, and influencing others. Since I started to look over the meat I eat I do not feel as bad when I do eat it. By having more meat in my meals it has added variety because I was getting bored with, my usual veggie sandwich. Over Thanksgiving break I talked to my family about what we have been learning and my SMART goal. My mom and sister were very interested in what I had to say. My sister is already a bit of a "freak" about her meat so I think it is safe to say I have her on "my side". :) It was also a great experience being able to see first hand a farm that raises animals the natural way. Shepard's Homestead raises grass-fed cattle and hormone-free chickens.

My challenges have still been when I do go out to eat or when I go home. Going out to eat has not been as big of a challenge since I cut back on that but with the holidays approaching I have been going home a lot. When I go home, meat is definitely one of the items on the menu for every meal. When I asked my dad if the deli meat was hormone-free he gave me the funniest look. Looks like I still have some rubbing off to do on some of my family members.

I feel I am doing very good on being consistent with my SMART goal. A couple of times I have slipped up but I got right back on track. I am happy with the outcome so far. I learned this past week that with accurate information you can really make an impact on others' lives. I took everything we have learned from Environmental Health and told it to my family in a nutshell. We ended up having about a 30 minute conversation about how some animals are butchered and how unethical it is (We didn't have this chat at the most ideal time either...after stuffing ourselves with Turkey).

I think for next week I am going to change my goal to: I will eat 4 servings (serving= 3 oz.) of hormone-free meat, per week.
Since I have started to eat more meat I realized how many of my meals before were blah. I plan to keep up with this goal while influencing others to do the same.

Eye Opener: Photo Essay

For my Photo Essay I decided to visit a sixty acre farm called Sheperd's Homestead located in Oulu, Wisconsin. It is owned by Larry and Margie Falter, my friend Emily's parents. I chose to visit their farm for many reasons. One day I was talking to my friend Emily about this assignment because I wanted to do something I would enjoy. She ended up telling me about her family farm and it really caught my attention. They raise their own animals and eat what their animals produce. I asked her if there were any days she had free to make the 60 mile drive to visit. We chose this past Saturday to make the drive. It was awesome meeting with her family and seeing all of the different things they do to make ends meet. Some of the things they do on the farm are:
  • Raise grass-fed beef cattle (Hay and grain during the Winter)
  • Raise chickens ( 2 separate types)- Eat the eggs and meat they produce
  • Harvest a garden during summer months-sell produce to people in the community (There are 2 gardens)
  • Use products produced on farm (grind grain to make flour, drink milk from dairy cows)
  • Have sheep-eat meat; sell wool (Biggest seller on the farm for the meat)
  • Make homemade applesauce/cider, spaghetti sauce, yogurt, bread, salsa, pickles
  • Excess products get canned during winter months; eat fresh during summer months

Farm Fresh Eggs

Ground Beef from their farm

Fresh Bread made from the grain produced in the field

Homemade Yogurt and Strawberry Jam

Milk from the neighbor's dairy cow and container used to hold the milk

Layer Hens in their coop

Beef Cows eating their hay

Sheep in the hay bed

Eco-Chic Lifestyle Change Week 3: Weekly Update

My SMART goal is, I will only eat 3 servings (serving= 3 oz) of hormone-free, grass-fed meat, per week. I did a great job at achieving my goal this past week. I am actually very happy with myself.

During this week I bought Hormel 100% Natural Turkey, Ham, and Roast Beef. This meat also has no added hormones, MSG, and is gluten-free. It surprised me because like most people, you think the "better" choice is going to be much more expensive when in reality it is not. For one package of meat it was only $3.98! This is even cheaper than some of your other choices of deli meat. My success at the store gave me a boost of confidence that I can do this. Some disadvantages I experienced were once again with the food I receive from a restaurant. How do I know where it came from? One strategy I used to overcome this was simple, do not go out to eat. When I do not go out to eat I do not have to worry about where my meat was processed and I save money. My other alternative to when I go out to eat is to do a meatless meal.

I experienced great feelings this week about my goal. It feels good to actually stick to something and be able to share your experience with others. I am now trying to pass the information I am learning about animal products to family and friends so they too can follow in my footsteps. At times I do get discouraged when I am out to eat because I think restaurants should have to state where they get their meat products from. This could even work to their advantage by giving them more customers who appreciate their honesty and ways of buying foods.

I learned this week that buying locally, buying organic, or buying hormone-free foods is a lot easier and cheaper than most people think. Like they say do not listen to everything you hear. Find out for youself! Now when I talk to people I am able to tell them the truth that these foods are reasonably priced and so much better for you!

I plan to stick to this same goal for next week, considering 3 servings of meat is plenty for me. Next week I am thinking about trying maybe steak or chicken because I have yet to do that and I am curious to see if the taste is different. Wish me luck!

Share & Voice: SHIP meeting

Northeastern Minnesota Ship Regional Leadership Team Meeting:

On Friday, November 19th I had the opportunity to attend the Minnesota Statewide Health Improvement Plan meeting. It was actually very interesting and fun. I got the chance to listen to current plans being implemented right now, meet some very fun and important people, and was offered a volunteering job with Elissa Hansen, the NE MN SHIP Regional Coordinator. Some of the current programs we discussed were:
  • Breastfeeding Intervention
  • NE MN SHIP Update
  • Worksite Wellness Invention
  • Tobacco addiction
After discussing Worksite Wellness it really got me thinking that this is something I am really interested in. Fit City Duluth showed a PowerPoint presentation that had a lot of information on it and how to get involved. It makes me excited that I may have found something else I am really interested in. If you have any questions regarding SHIP or Fit City Duluth the websites are listed above.

*FYI: They also mentioned how we should let people know there is a Health Survey going on right now. According to the handout we received, "Starting in November, over 5,000 individuals in a nine-county area will be asked to respond to a telephone survey". It is very important to answer this call because it will only benefit your health. So tell around to answer this phone call it is NOT a telemarketer! Thanks :)

Share & Voice: Test Your Knowledge

Test Your GMO Knowledge

While browsing some of my favorite television shows websites I came across this GMO quiz. I found this quiz on the TLC website. This quiz has some of the same information we have talked about in class and watched in the movies. I am embarrassed to admit I only got 3 out of 10 right! :S.....not very good. Some of the questions are shocking. I would tell you which ones but I do not want to give away any answers. Let me know what you guys think of the quiz and how you did! Good Luck!

Advocacy Project: Issue Overview

Introduction:

Healthy People 2010 want to: Increase the proportion of family planning agencies that offer emergency contraception (9.5)

Thomas wants to pass bill H.R. 5561 Emergency Contraception Education Act of 2010

I decided to focus on emergency contraception use. I think everyone needs to be aware of the options that are out there for them. Receiving education will give them the knowledge to make the best decisions for themselves.

Who is affected by the issue?

Many people and places will be affected by emergency contraceptive use. People and places that could potentially be affected would be sexually active people, places involved in family planning like Planned Parenthood, hospitals, and clinics. Most sexually active people will be affected by emergency contraceptive use. Whether you are the girl or women who could become pregnant or the boy or man who could become a father you are equally affected. This also effects organizations like Planned Parenthood or hospitals/clinics because they need to be just as educated about contraceptive use so they can give reliable information.

Who is affected most?

The people who are affected most by emergency contraceptive use and education would be the women who have the option of taking it. There are too many unwanted pregnancies in the United States. Women should have the choice to have a baby or prevent it. Emergency contraceptive education and resources would give girls or women the option of having a baby when they are ready. Just because education is given does not mean they have to use this product it would be just for their information.

Who loses and what do they lose?

Women who have an unplanned pregnancy and the father of the baby would lose a lot. Depending on their age, they would lose different things. Teenage parents would lose their life. Most teenage parents struggle for years because of all the items babies need. Many do not finish high school, they break up, experience high levels of stress, or lose friends or family. Older women may not have the resources to support a child either. Many loses come with unplanned pregnancies because of exactly what I just said....they are unplanned.

Who gains and what do they gain?

Women who use emergency contraceptives and do not get pregnant gain from this. They were able to receive education on the use of this pill and then find the resources to get it. Most hopefully knew the benefits and consequences before using the pill. Men also gain from contraceptive use. Even though they are not the ones using this they should be aware of what it is and that it is out there. Men and women who are not prepared to be parents should know where to go and how to use it so there are less pregnancies.

What are the consequences of the issue?

For Individuals:

Unplanned pregnancies will keep rising if people do not have the education on emergency contraceptives or resources to get them. Instead of preventing the process of implantation more women will have abortions or give their children up for adoption. (Do not get me wrong adoption is a great thing but it can be a very long process for kids to get adopted so most end up in a foster home for period of time.) Having a baby is also very expense. The cost for new parents usually causes a lot of stress and hardship for them.

For the families:
Depending on the age of the females the families could experience some consequences. Parents or guardians may not approve of emergency contraceptives. If they received proper education on the benefits of its use they may feel better about letting their kids use it. Also, if teenagers end up getting pregnant many times the parents are the ones that bare some of the responsibilities for the child because their kids are unable to raise it.

For Society:
In our society we have many unplanned pregnancies. We all bare the cost for this with our tax dollars. Instead of having unplanned, unwanted kids we should put more time and effort towards education and resources to preventing them. All family planning agencies should be able to administer emergency contraceptives as long as the people receiving this are given some education beforehand. Also, our foster-care homes are suffering. There are starting to become too full or do not have enough money or other resources to sustain the kids they have now.

What is the economic impact of the issue?

The cost of educating those about emergency contraceptive use does not even compare to the cost of unplanned pregnancies. The cost of having a baby, giving it up for adoption, or having an abortion are more expensive to the family or society than giving out information on taking a pill that cost between 30 and 50 dollars that will prevent a pregnancy. Most of the time the pill does not cost you anything as long as you have insurance. Society ends up footing out a lot of money for children because when they are put into foster homes or on assistance programs part of our tax dollars go to supporting them. Our society would benefit from having less people on assistance programs or children in foster homes because then we would have more money to put towards health insurance or other programs that benefit people.

What is the social impact of this issue?

Some social impacts that could result because of this issue could be the thought that more people will be sexually active because there is a pill that will prevent pregnancy. Hopefully with the proper education people will know this should not be used as a permanent form of birth control. Another issue could be whether parents will let their kids use this. Women may also be afraid to use it because of what people may think of them.

What are the barriers?

Barriers to this issue are getting people to support this and finding the money to support it. Parents may oppose the use of this because it could give the impression it is okay to have sex because there is a way to avoid pregnancy. Also pro-choice people are viewing this as a form of abortion so they do not support it. Some people are under the impression that because this pill is readily available more kids will want to have sex because there are ways to avoid pregnancy.

To overcome these issues we need to educate. We need to show people that this pill does not terminate a baby or cause harm to ones' body. Emergency contraceptives prevent the process of implantation so no baby is actually made. Receiving education and having the resources to get more information should help people feel better about making the decision to using contraceptives or not.

What are the resources?

The main resource we have is education. Communities need to be informed on how emergency contraceptives work. By going through a community meeting, getting hand outs, or talking to public health nurses people will be able to get the proper education on how to use these. People will then be able to address any concerns or questions they have and get reliable answers. This resource could be tapped by going through clinics, hospitals, or agencies like Planned Parenthood who could receive grant money from the government.

What is the history of this issue?

I found an article from the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) stating that they are stepping up efforts to get emergency contraception to women. This article was released on May 8th, 2006. From personal experience within the last few years the amount of information regarding emergency contraceptives has increased from the use of hand-outs, posters, and discussion with health professionals.

Allies and Opponents

People that would support this would be most people in the health field (doctors, nurses, health educators). If unplanned pregnancies can be avoided without harming the person or aborting a baby this would be the method of choice.

People who would oppose this would be some doctors or nurses and pro-choice activists. Some doctors or nurses would oppose this because there has not been any studies that go back long enough to see if there are any long-term effects. There has also been the controversy about hormones in birth control increasing breast cancer in women. Pro-choice activists are also arguing that using emergency contraceptives is just like abortion, when in reality it is not the same at all. To create a common ground between allies and opponents I think all women should have to talk to a nurse or doctor or go to a meeting to receive information about emergency contraceptives so they are fully aware of what they are taking.

Recommendations:

I think policy holders should vote
yes for this bill because it is a safe way to lower the number of unwanted, unplanned pregnancies. Emergency contraceptives provide a second chance for those who happen to have an accident.

Eco-Chic Lifestyle Change Week 2: Weekly Update

My SMART goal is I will only eat 3 servings (serving= 3 oz) of hormone-free, grass-fed meat, per week. In achieving my goal this week I did okay.

The strategies that helped me be successful were to look online at ways to find this kind of meat and to study the packages of meat, looking for hormones or other additives listed in the ingredients. Some challenges I faced are actually finding a good selection in the grocery store of these kind of meats. I think I would have better luck going through a local farmer but because I am not from this area it would be harder for me to do this. Also, when I go to a restaurant they do not usually list how they get their meat. The only restaurant I have went to recently that states their meat is hormone-free and their animals are grass fed is Chipotle. I know I could easily ask how they get their meat but many times I have young servers who mostly likely will not know the answer to this.

The feelings I experienced were confusion, nervousness, embarrassment, and excitement. I felt confused because many times it was not specifically listed on the front of the meat. Before when I have bought hormone-free meat there was a big orange sticker that said this on the front. Also, I felt nervous and embarrassed because I did not know how to ask the butcher or waiter where the meat came from. I know it is silly to feel embarrassed about an issue like this but when you have a table full of people or a line behind you at the local deli the last thing you want is to hold up the line or get a crazy look because they may have never been asked a question like this before.

I learned this week that my goal is a little more difficult than I thought it would be. For this week I plan to do a little more research on my favorite restaurants to see if their websites list where they obtain their meat. I also plan to ask my roommates, who work at a local restaurant, if they know where they get their meat from. I came to the realization that I should not be scared or nervous to ask a simple question like this especially from butchers in a deli because this is their job to know which meat is what and where they get it from. For right now I am going to keep my goal the way it is and see how this week goes.

Advocacy Project: Healthy People/THOMAS

After looking over the topics in Healthy People 2010 I decided to focus on Family Planning because it is such a controversial issue in the United States. It is very important for family planning agencies to offer emergency contraceptives. The only way to lower the number of unintended pregnancies is to educate those about contraceptive use or abstinence. This area also catches my attention because I think it would be a great job to interact and educate others on precautions to take when or if they want to become sexually active. The specific objective I chose to focus on is to increase the proportion of family planning agencies that offer emergency contraception.

Revised Objective
Increase the proportion of family planning agencies that offer emergency contraception.

Target: 90 percent.

Baseline: 80 percent of family planning agencies offered emergency contraception in 1999.

Target setting method: 13 percent improvement.

Data source: The Alan Guttmacher Institute.

Update on the progress:
According to the Progress Quotient Chart, this objective has actually moved away from its target of 90 percent. Between 1999 and 2003 it had actually moved away from the target by 10 percent.
9-5. Emergency contraception provided by family planning agencies (1999, 2003)
-10% - Moved away from target

The progress has been moving away from the target so more effort needs to be put toward this goal.

I was also not able to find any information about the disparities or opportunities and challenges.

Emerging Issues: It is hard to know when a person feels the pregnancy was intended or unintended. Using feelings towards pregnancy is a better way to understand how the women or couple feels about contraceptives and birth care. They are also questioning how you can decide what "pregnancy preparation" really means.

Share & Voice: Whole Foods Co-Op

Many of you are going to be surprised but I have NEVER been to the Whole Foods Coop....I know very sad. Since I have never been there I decided to check their website out before I make my trip there next week. Their website has many things to offer, they have coupons, recipes, newsletters, membership information, local artist information, their mission, employment opportunities, and class and meeting info. I never realized they did as many things as they do. I just figured they were another "health store". I overlooked their class schedule and it looks like a lot of fun. They offer classes called, Preserving your Garden, Pizza-From Scratch, Gluten-Free Baking, Healing with Homeopathy: Remedies for First Aid, and etc. If you have never been there like me take a trip soon because I hear they have some amazing products. Also, if you have some time checkout their website.

I would also love to hear some feedback about those who have been there before. Did you like it? Is the food very expensive? Or anything you would like to say :) Thanks!

Eco-Chic Lifestyle Change Week 1: My SMART Goal

For our Eco-Chic blog this week we need to create a SMART goal. A SMART goal is specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely. My SMART goal for the next 10 weeks is:

I will only eat 3 servings (serving= 3 oz) of hormone-free, grass-fed meat, per week.

This lifestyle change is Eco-Chic because eating hormone-free, grass fed meat is the best for you and the environment. Farmers that raise these kind of animals are doing it the natural way. Instead of injecting growth hormones and other additives into these animals to increase their production, they are producing the amount they were born to make. I also hope to buy my meat locally to help local farms make a profit.

I chose this particular behavior because I do not eat meat that often but when I do I want to make sure it is in its natural form. I think the goal of three servings of meat a week will be a good way for me to eat less meat while still choosing the more natural product. I chose to do this because I usually prefer soy-based meats to real meat but I have my cravings. Changing this actual behavior is important to me because I know I can do it. I do not like how some farms and industries are taking care of their animals. It sickens me to know that a lot of the meat I have ate in my lifetime has been pumped with hormones and other additives. I think this change will be easier to make because all of the meat-free or hormone-free options now given at restaurants and in grocery stores. The only problems I may encounter are how to find these hormone-free, grass fed products because I have never taken the time to look before. I also hope the cost is isn't too overwhelming!

I will start this change today, Wednesday November 10th. Wish me luck! :)
